Doesn't this one look pretty? Too bad it didn't taste as good as it looks.
Earlier this week I made the Almond Flavor Agar Mix that I found in Oakland's Chinatown.
I haven't really used agar before and it firms up sort of like gelatin but definitely not the same texture or mouth feel, if you will. This particular kind was also super sweet, even for jello.
But before I knew how it would all taste together, it sure looked nice! I cubed the Almond Flavor Agar (which, turns out, also has some gelatin in), chopped up a half a leftover can of tart, pitted cherries, and toasted some almond slices.
I also added a little whipped cream, as you do.
This one just didn't come together in the end. All the different parts were there: the sweet almond jelly, the tart cherries, the salty almonds. For some reason, it just didn't do it for me or my taste testers. Paige is a champ who finished her entire bowl, but the guys struggled which was surprising. I just kept adding more whipped cream to mine. It sort of worked.
So this isn't one that I would recommend you try, but I'll try again with some different agar mixes and see if I just need to get over the texture or what. You might want to try this recipe with just a regular Cherry Jell-O and maybe a creamy layer flavored with a bit of almond extract?
And if that doesn't work, the answer is always: more whipped cream.
